The most desirable collagen is obtained from the skins of the Silver Carp (hypophthalmichthys molitrix), commonly known as the Balkan Carp. This fish is also a provider of valuable amino acids and polypeptides. It is also a source of high quality fish liver oil. It is a valuable source of enzymes and anti septic preparations.
The Balkan Silver Carp is relatively easy to breed and raise and can withstand large water (read more) temperature differences, especially high temperatures. These high temperatures encourage the formation of high quality collagen. Past experience has shown that to obtain collagen of equal quality, from fish such as Salmon and European Carp, the collagen had to be strengthened by additions of skeletal network promoting agents such as enzyme promoters and transglutaminase.
